How it works

THE DISCIPLINES

Precision is key. To ensure a fair and professional playing field, we've clearly defined the criteria for each of our core Disciplines below – outlining exactly what differentiates a Singing entry from Song & Dance, or a Jazz routine from Musical Theatre. Following these category breakdowns, you will find the complete guide to our Performance Divisions (Novice vs. Open), Age Groupings, Scoring System, and Competition Rules. Read this section carefully to ensure you are entered correctly and ready to compete.

Singing

This discipline focuses exclusively on vocal performance and storytelling. Entrants should present a song that highlights their vocal ability, range, and control. While natural stage movement and characterisation are encouraged to enhance the delivery, this is not a dance category.

Tracks: Tracks must be instrumental only with no pre-recorded lead vocals.

Microphones: Competitors must use the provided handheld microphone and stand or headsets.

Group Tech: We provide a maximum of 4 headsets/4 handheld microphones. Small and Large Groups must utilise these for principal vocalists only; ensemble singing will be picked up by general stage mics.

Song & Dance

Entrants must perform live vocals integrated with choreography or a structured dance break. Scoring is equally weighted between disciplines, focusing on vocal technique, dance execution, stamina, and consistent characterisation.

Tracks: No lead vocals permitted on the backing track; dance breaks may have full instrumentation.

Microphones: Competitors must use the headsets or microphones provided.

Group Tech: We provide a maximum of 4 headsets/4 handheld microphones. Small and Large Groups must utilise these for principal vocalists only; ensemble singing will be picked up by general stage mics.

Musical Theatre Dance/Show Dance

This discipline is strictly dance-only with no live singing. Routines should focus on storytelling and theatrical performance, reflecting the style of Broadway or Show Dance. Judging is based on dance technique, stylistic choreography, and strong characterisation.

Lip-Syncing: Lip-syncing is permitted to enhance characterisation, but no vocal microphones will be provided or allowed.

Jazz

Jazz: Focusing on strong stylistic choreography and dynamic performance. Routines must demonstrate technical precision, flexibility, and high energy. Judging prioritises sharp Jazz technique—specifically kicks, turns, and leaps—alongside rhythm and stage presence.

Acrobatics: Acrobatics are to be avoided. We want to see technical Jazz skills, not gymnastics.

Tap

Focusing on rhythm, timing, and intricate footwork. Styles may range from classic Broadway and theatrical tap to contemporary rhythm and hoofing. Judging prioritises the clarity of beats, musicality, and stylistic execution.

Tracks: Backing tracks must not contain any pre-recorded tap sounds; clear distinct footwork is essential.

Microphones: Floor microphones are provided as standard for all tap numbers.

Open Narrative

(Small & Large Groups only)

This category invites groups to utilise any dance style, from ballet and lyrical to contemporary and hip hop to tell a compelling story. The primary focus is on narrative impact and creativity rather than strict adherence to a single genre. Judges will heavily weigh the clarity of the storyline, emotional connection, and how effectively the choreography conveys the plot or theme.

Scoring Focus: Storytelling is the dominant factor in this category; technical execution is important, but the narrative delivery is paramount.

Broadway Knockout Challenge

(Special Event)

A high-energy, knockout event where dancers improvise to random music cuts (Jazz/Musical Theatre) selected by the DJ. Judges eliminate participants round-by-round based on adaptability, musicality, and performance flair until a single champion is crowned.

Format: Dancers must remain on the floor and improvise to various genres; no prepared choreography or props are allowed.
