Safeguarding Summary

Last updated: January 2026

Broadway Breakthrough is committed to creating a safe, positive and inclusive environment for all children, young people and adults at risk who take part in our competitions, workshops and events. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, and we work closely with parents/carers, teachers, studios and venues to ensure the wellbeing of every participant.

1.Our Commitment

  • Every child and young person has the right to feel safe, respected and supported.
  • We take all safeguarding concerns seriously and act quickly and appropriately.
  • All staff, volunteers and adjudicators follow strict safeguarding procedures and professional conduct standards.
  • All staff working directly with children are vetted through Disclosure Scotland.

2.Key Safety Measures at Our Events

2.1First Aid

  • Qualified First Aiders are present at all events to manage injuries or medical emergencies.

2.2Backstage & Venue Access

  • Only competitors, teachers and authorised chaperones with official wristbands may enter backstage areas.
  • Parents/Spectators (unless acting as the registered licensed chaperone with a wristband) are not permitted in dressing rooms or wings.
  • Dressing rooms are gender-specific unless otherwise required for accessibility or safeguarding reasons.

2.3Supervision & Chaperoning

  • Each school/studio is responsible for supervising their competitors throughout the event.
  • Broadway Breakthrough staff oversee backstage safety, movement, and stage flow.

2.4Photography & Filming

  • We may photograph or film performances for promotional, archival or celebratory purposes.
  • Consent is collected during registration.
  • Parents may take photos in designated areas (e.g. awards walls, foyer), but strictly no photography or filming is permitted of the stage/performances or within dressing rooms.

2.5Online Safety

  • All communication with participants takes place through official Broadway Breakthrough channels.
  • We do not permit direct messaging between staff and participants on personal accounts.
  • Students/Competitors should be supervised by their parents/guardians/teachers regarding online activity during events.

3.Behaviour & Conduct

We operate a zero tolerance approach to:

  • Bullying
  • Harassment
  • Aggression from parents, competitors or staff
  • Inappropriate language, music or choreography

Anyone who breaches these standards may be removed from the event.

4.Lost Child / Welfare Concerns

If a child is separated from their group:

  • They will be taken to a designated safe area
  • A senior staff member will coordinate reunification
  • Identification checks will be carried out before release
